What are the basic guidelines for practicing Yoga?

It is recommended that you bring your own mat and a beach towel to class. Because Yoga poses work the muscles, organs and respiratory systems, practice on an empty stomach and after you have evacuated the bowels. Never strain to attain or hold a posture. If you feel pain or strain, notify your instructor immediately. If you have a medical condition, please consult your doctor for medical clearance. During menstruation, you may wish to avoid inversions.

What are the benefits of Yoga?

Yoga is a system which works within the body to correct structural alignment, increase strength, flexibility and endurance. It also tones the internal systems - endocrine, digestive, etc. Using breath control practices the respiratory system is exercised and refreshed. Yoga practice increases mental clarity and the capacity to focus the mind. It is a holistic approach that works with the body's inner intelligence as a guide. A sense of integration, peacefulness and contentment are frequently sited as the stress relieving results of Yoga practice.

Can I attend class if I have never taken Yoga before?

Yes! You are welcome to come. Please take your time to become familiar with the poses and approach. Be gentle with yourself! Yoga is a journey and an exploration. Begin where you are, and don't worry about 'getting it all right'. Allow yourself to explore your inner landscape as you move in new and unusual ways. Address any concerns you have with the instructor.

Can I attend class if I have an injury or physical limitation?

Please contact Jenny first. In most cases, the answer will be yes, with supervision, however you may need medical clearance. Modifications will be recommended to suit your abilities, and some poses may need to be omitted. Give yourself permission to practice without pain or discomfort. Consider a private session to assess your condition and prepare you to modify poses so you can practice safely. Begin with a Gentle Yoga group class.
